Cookie Policy

Last updated: 2026-04-07 · Complements our Privacy Policy

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files stored by your browser when you visit a website. They let sites remember things — like whether you're signed in, or what language you prefer — across page loads.

Under UK GDPR, the ePrivacy Regulations (PECR), and the EU ePrivacy Directive, we must: (1) tell you what cookies we set, (2) explain what each one does, (3) get your consent for non-essential cookies before they load.

The cookies we set

We minimize cookies aggressively. There are two classes:

🔒 Strictly necessary (no consent required)

These are required for the site to work. Under UK GDPR Art. 5(3) and PECR Reg. 6(4), strictly-necessary cookies are exempt from consent requirements. You cannot opt out of these — if you disable them, you cannot log in or submit forms.

📊 Optional analytics (opt-in only)

These help us understand which pages are popular and whether the site is working. They are self-hosted (no Google, no Facebook). You can refuse them with no impact on functionality. Default: OFF.

_plausibleSENTINEL (self-hosted Plausible)Aggregated page view counts. No personal data, no cross-site tracking, no fingerprinting.30 days

🚫 What we do NOT set

  • No Google Analytics (_ga, _gid, _gat) — never
  • No Google Tag Manager
  • No Facebook Pixel (_fbp, _fbc)
  • No LinkedIn Insight Tag
  • No Twitter / X conversion pixel
  • No TikTok / Meta / Pinterest pixels
  • No Hotjar, Segment, Mixpanel, Amplitude, Heap, or similar
  • No advertising network cookies
  • No retargeting / behavioral cookies
  • No cross-site tracking cookies of any kind

How to manage cookies

On our site

When you first visit SENTINEL, a small consent banner appears at the bottom of the page offering "Accept analytics" or "Essentials only". Your choice is remembered for 12 months via the sentinel_consent cookie. You can change your choice anytime by clearing that cookie or clicking the "reset cookie preferences" link.

In your browser

All modern browsers let you block or delete cookies site-by-site or globally. Useful guides:

Blocking strictly-necessary cookies will break login, form submission, and security protections. That's a valid choice — but please know what you're trading off.

Do Not Track & Global Privacy Control

We honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal. If your browser sends GPC, we treat it as an opt-out of the optional analytics cookie — the same as clicking "Essentials only" in the banner.

Changes to this cookie policy

If we add, remove, or change a cookie, we update this page and — if the change is material — prompt existing users to review their consent on their next visit.
